Unless you’re one of the few people who brings a magnifying glass to the supermarket, you probably don’t read the tiny nutritional facts on your food packaging. It’s a missed opportunity.
Food labels allow us to control the amount of sodium, sugar, calories and fat that goes into our diet. And when we make healthy choices, we can reduce our risk nutrition-related chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
To help consumers, we’re taking part in Canada’s Healthy Eating Awareness and Education Initiatives. As part of our participation in this program, Nordica packaging will now have a more visible nutrition facts label, as well as a new Daily Value % symbol.
The Daily Value % provides a quick overview of the nutrient profile of a food. You can use the feature as a tool to compare two different food products for nutritional content. Or, you can also use the Daily Value % to select products that are high in desirable nutrients like protein and fiber, and lower in those you don’t want, like sugar and sodium. A Daily Value % rating of 5 or less is low, while anything over 15 is considered high.
The goal of this initiative is to build Canadians’ awareness and understanding of healthy eating in a way that will motivate them to make healthy food choices.
