Gay Lea Foods Co-operative Limited (“Gay Lea Foods”) announced today that it is donating 24,000 kg of premium milk replacer produced at its Grober Nutrition facility in Cambridge, Ontario, to support dairy farmers impacted by the severe flooding in British Columbia last week.
The load will be manufactured at Grober Nutrition (a 100 per cent Gay Lea Foods-owned subsidiary) and on the road by the end of the week. In collaboration with B.C.-based Dairy Crop Solutions, the product will be distributed to dairy farms in need.
The combined venture is expected to supply enough milk replacer to feed 400 calves for 60-70 days, an effort the businesses hope will help ease some of the agricultural supply issues in the impacted area, where feed and water for animals that survived the flooding remain a serious concern.
“This is one way we can use our capabilities at Gay Lea Foods to help support communities co-operatively,” says Rob Goodwill, Chair of Gay Lea Foods. “We thank everyone who helped make this possible and want everyone impacted by the devastating floods to know that Canadians stand behind them.”
“It’s been heartbreaking to witness the devastation caused by the floods in British Columbia and our hearts go out to the people, farmers and communities affected,” said Gay Lea Foods President & CEO, Michael Barrett. “Many of our members and employees came to us to ask how we can help.”
Located in Cambridge, Ontario, Grober is a world leader in young animal nutrition, specializing in milk replacers and milk-based feeds designed to enhance the potential of young animals. The business became part of Gay Lea Foods in November 2020.
DairyCrop Solutions will be distributing product free of charge to those most in need.
